About LINGOs - Overview

The mission of LINGOs is to facilitate the creation, development and support of learning environments in the humanitarian relief, development and environmental sector.

Created in 2005 as a means for organizations to share learning resources, LINGOs has grown to include over 35 organizations and is continuously expanding as as more organizations become aware of the value of membership. LINGOs has served as a central contact point for private sector organizations that are interested in assisting the sector but want to see their contributions of software, courseware, systems and services be leveraged across many organizations. LINGOs operates a Learning Management System (LMS) that contains hundreds of courses on Leadership and Management Development, Information Technology, Project Management, Stress Management for Humanitarian Workers, Personal Safety and other topics. LINGOs Members can access the content through custom branded portals or through a shared portal depending on their level of membership.

In addition, LINGOs provides monthly webinars led by industry experts on a wide range of organizational and development topics. Recent webinars have focused on Development of Communities of Practice, Development of Field-based Trainers, Online Facilitation Skills, Implications of Web 2.0 for field communications, Using Games in Development Training, Field to Field Learning and many others topics. Access to the webinars is open to anyone interested and is not limited to members.

Finally, through the generous support of partner organizations, LINGOs makes available a wide range of tools for developing, distributing and implementing learning strategies. For more on the Learning Tools click here.

LINGOs member benefits include access to the latest learning software (Elluminate, Outstart Trainer, Articulate Studio, Intralearn LMS, Sharepoint and others), server space for LMS management and related technical support, access to high-quality courses in relevant management areas, the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with like-minded organizations, and much, much more.

LINGOs courses are both donated from our partners and built by our agencies.  Most often they are synchronous courses, but in some cases we also offer remote, asynchronous courses.  Most of the courses are delivered through the learning portals of our member agencies; organizations such as CARE International decide which of our courses can be included on their learning portals.

In addition to our work promoting collaborations between international NGOs, LINGOs has established relationships with learning leaders in the private sector.  These relationships have resulted in donations that enable LINGOs to provide Learning Management Systems, eLearning development tools, synchronous, virtual meeting software, and industry-leading course catalogs to LINGOs members free of charge.

LINGOs also leverages our relationships with the private sector to identify learning professionals who volunteer their time to help LINGOs members identify, develop and implement new approaches to learning.

The LINGOs Volunteer Program matches LINGOs member learning needs with experienced professionals interested in giving back some of their time and talents.  LINGOs members request support in utilizing LINGOs learning tools (such as Articulate, Elluminate and Outstart Trainer), formulating learning strategies, designing and developing courses, managing their LMS, and much more. 

LINGOs also utilizes volunteer talents to design and hold training in areas such as on-line facilitation and project management; review LINGOs course offerings for content relevance, and help with sharepoint and LMS maintenance, among many others. The ways LINGOs can use volunteers are limitless!

LINGOs Volunteers work virtually!  They come primarily from the private sector and are highly skilled in the areas of organization learning strategy, training and facilitation, eLearning tools, etc.

The LINGOs Volunteer Community is a space where LINGOs members and volunteers can connect and learn together.  This site is where you can:

2. Request a LINGOs volunteer and review volunteer profiles

3. Find out about upcoming LINGOs Volunteer Program events and announcements

4. Participate in Volunteer Program discussions on topics of interest

5. Get ideas for how you might use a LINGOs volunteer

6. Provide feedback on your LINGOs volunteer experience

In order to enter and participate in the LINGOs Volunteer Community, LINGOs member staff and volunteers need to obtain authorization.  In order to obtain your username and password, please contact the Volunteer Community Manager, Leslie Sherriff: Leslie@lingos.org.

MEMBERS: To request a volunteer, please enter the Volunteer Program Community to download the Volunteer Request Form.  Send the completed form to Leslie Sherriff, LINGOs Volunteer Program Coordinator at Leslie@lingos.org.

VOLUNTEERS: If you are interested in becoming a LINGOs volunteer, please visit the Volunteer Program Community Landing Page and download the Volunteer Information Form found at the right.  Then send the form to Leslie Sherriff, LINGOs Volunteer Program Coordinator at Leslie@lingos.org.  Registered volunteers can enter the Volunteer Program Community to find new volunteer opportunities and interact with other volunteers.
