 Minimum System Requirements

NOTE:  Specifications listed below are current as of January 26, 2010

The LMS, by itself, is compatible with:
  • Browsers:  Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, and 8.x or Firefox 3.x
The user’s browser needs to support JavaScript and allow site-specific pop-up windows and cookies.   (NOTE:  The rich-text editor is not compatible with Firefox. Firefox users will only have the option of using the plain-text editor.)
  • Operating Systems:  Computers capable of running browser software above
  • Plug-ins:  Java (if logging in as Registrar)
  • Screen Resolution: 800 x 600 minimum
  • Connectivity:  56 Kbps minimum

NOTES:

  • If you develop courses using a 3rd-party tool such as Articulate or Outstart trainer, the courses you develop may have additional requirements above and beyond the basic requirements of the LMS (such as Adobe Flash and Shockwave players or any items you build into the course that require a plug-in to view).
  • In terms of screen size and resolution, keep your audience in mind (you don’t want to design a course for a 1024 x 768 screen resolution if most of your users have their displays set to 800 x 600.
  • Also, keep your audience in mind in terms of bandwidth required (you don’t want to develop a multi-media rich course if the majority of your users will have slow or sporadic internet connectivity).
Requirements for specific vendor-supplied, LMS-accessible courses (in addition to or instead of the basic end-user requirements listed above):
  • Harvard (low-bandwidth courses)
    • Browsers:  Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, or 8.x.  The user’s browser needs to support JavaScript, allow site-specific pop-up windows, and cookies.
    • Operating Systems:  Windows XP, 2000, or Vista
    • Plug-ins:  Adobe Flash Player 4.x or better
    • Application Programs:  To open most of the Tools, the user will need a word-processing program such as Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader 4.x or better may be used.

  • Harvard v10 (high-bandwidth courses)
    • Browsers:  Internet Explorer 6.x, 7.x, 8.x or Firefox 3.x.  The user’s browser needs to support JavaScript and allow site-specific pop-up windows and cookies.  In addition, the following trusted sites should be added to the security settings of the user’s browser:

      • Adobe Reader 4.x or better
    • Client and/or organization firewall requirements:
      • Port 80 streaming/download access (if access had been locked, the firewall administrator may need to set the configuration to allow Adobe Flash Player traffic, so that Flash Player can receive streamed media without compromising the security of the firewall)
      • Trusted sites added:
        • your learning sub-portal
        • harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu
        • elearninghome.hbsp.org
