A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge

The PMBOK Guide is an internationally recognized standard (IEEE Std 1490-2003) that provides the fundamentals of project management as they apply to a wide range of projects, including construction, software, engineering, automotive, etc.

The Guide is process-based, meaning it describes work as being accomplished by processes. This approach is consistent with other management standards such as ISO 9000 and the Software Engineering Institute's CMMI. Processes overlap and interact throughout a project or its various phases. Processes are described in terms of:

  • Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.)
  • Tools and Techniques (mechanisms applied to inputs)
  • Outputs (documents, products, etc.)

1.       Technical Project Management Skills:e

    1. Harvard Mentor: Project Management

                                                               i.      Provides a relatively short, high level introduction to project management that is condensed into a single course.

    1. proj01-12: Project Management

                                                               i.      This sequence of 12 MindLeaders courses provides more in depth analysis of the Technical Project Mangement competencies.  The courses are aligned with the PMI Project Management Life Cycle and the 9 Knoweldge Areas identified by PMI – however, its purpose is not to prepare for certification.

    1. pmp501-507 - Project Management Professional Certification 2005

                                                               i.      This sequence of 7  MindLeaders courses covers similar content to the courses provided by the courses identified in point b above.  The information, however, is primarily focused on preparing the learner to sit the Project Management Professional certification exam.  It is very test-centric and completion of the content does qualify a user to receive Project Management Education credits.  Note, HOWEVER, if any of your users intend to use the courses to quality for PMI continuing education credits, it is VERY important that you work with LINGOs prior to their taking the courses so as to ensure their efforts are documented correctly.

  1. People Skills for Project Management
    1. pmef01-05 - Project Management from a People Perspective: This Mindleaders 5-course sequence focuses far less on the technical skills required of project managers and focuses far more on the people management skills – leading teams, managing difficult conversations, monitoring performance, etc.
  2. Project Management Software
    1. prj301-310 - Project 2003 – The ten courses in this course sequence all focus on the computer skills required to use Microsoft Project 2003.  This software program is the world leader among professional project managers.  The software program, however, is not extensively adopted among international NGOs.
